Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
This audio programme has been developed using a combination of the two forms of psychotherapy that are currently recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for treating IBS – cognitive behaviour therapy and hypnotherapy. These forms of psychotherapy have been proved to be effective for a large number of people whose IBS symptoms have not responded to other measures. When clients visit me for face-to-face therapy we use this audio programme as a central part of therapy, with very good results.
The programme comprises seven recordings (each with a daytime and night-time version) and a comprehensive listening schedule.
IBS is not a condition that you can diagnose by yourself. Before using this programme you should visit your GP and, if your GP thinks you may have IBS you will probably be recommended to see a gastroenterologist (a doctor who specialises in gut function). This is very important as you will need to check that your symptoms are not caused by some other condition such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease, and so on.
There are also certain things you will be encouraged to try before embarking on this audio programme. These include: an elimination diet to identify particular foods and drinks that may worsen your symptoms; changes to what you eat (a current approach is the FODMAP diet); increasing your use of probiotics; taking medication; and if your symptoms are mainly belching you might find that learning to breath properly (using your diaphragm rather than shallow upper-chest breathing) may do the trick.
Please note, these recordings cannot be downloaded straight to a tablet or smartphone. You will need to download the file to a computer and then transfer it to your mobile device.
